A commenter forecasts that within five years, documentaries and exposés will treat sports betting apps the same way the public now views the opioid crisis, attributing mass harm to industry greed and regulatory failure.
“I swear in 5 years we will be talking about all these betting apps & sites the way we talk about the opioid crisis”

I'm so sick of seeing actors, musicians, comedians shilling for people to ruin their lives. Just a year ago, I knew a young man who had a great-paying job, a nice girlfriend, apartment, and car. He became hooked on sports betting & everything is gone except the used car in which he now lives. Shame.

At my high school in the late 70's, Consumer Education was a required course. One of the subjects taught was how to recognize that advertising is bullshit. Is it too much to ask to bring this back? An updated class would also need to include explaining that "influencers" are bullshit.

Truly, can’t believe this trash is allowed, promoted extensively and people are happy to just take the advert cash. 🤦♂️ no one fucking cares man. It’s sad.
-
Someone on here said sports betting is this decade’s OxyContin and I think that is dead on balls accurate. We will all pay the price.
-
It will get worse before it gets better. Football already has a team in Las Vegas, and soon baseball and basketball will too.
-
I swear in 5 years we will be talking about all these betting apps & sites the way we talk about the opioid crisis There will be countless exposes and documentary specials about this corrupt industry and how greed and lack of regulation from the gov't led to the destruction of millions of US lives

Shazam. And I'm old enough to remember cigarette commercials on TV. Kids were watching. Agreed. Sports betting commercials are everywhere and there are pre-game, during the game parlays and post-game promotions on TV. Betters get notifications on their phones, prompts on the TV? Kids are watching.

I agree. I call slots “crack machines”. Now you can play with real money on your phones? That should be illegal. At least require people (mostly older women) to go to the casinos. The gambling addiction crises will spread.
-
The normalization of gambling through constant advertising deserves much more scrutiny. If an industry can create serious addiction and financial harm, why shouldn’t its marketing face stronger restrictions?
-
Yes…exactly. Watching the US Open last night..remarked to my husband what a joke the Dragt King commercials are that say at the bottom if you have a gambling problem to call this number 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️

We had a teacher who was a Madison Ave ad exec before he switched careers. He could point out subliminal stuff meant to influence your choices that nobody noticed. It was eye opening to say the least.
-
Polymarket and Kalshi are the worst offenders because they’re somehow not even subject to the regulations on gambling. “Rideshare” but for something a lot more socially toxic.
-
In Canada they banned cigarette & alcohol commercials..no vaping either but gambling commercials r insane!! An addiction that destroys lives, families & can end in suicide!
-
Anything addictive should be included. Ban Viagra commercials! and oxycodon, and cyalis, and any opioid from being on television
-
I know, right? Every time I see an actor flogging that crap, I write them off my happy list.
-
I think you're wasting words; "why betting commercials are not banned" would do it.
-
M
Drug commercials are in the same batch. All of them should be banned.
-
The fucking scorebug on yahoo fantasy says it's sponsored by Kalshi
-
and don’t get me started on all the prescription drug commercials!
-
Or alcohol commercials? They are advertising addictive behavior… It should be against the law, but trumps friends probably own it, so it’s allowed. It’s not like the United States cares about its citizens anymore. We are nothing more than a pimple on trump’s ugly face. He just hopes that we go away
-
Huh... you know what; it's possible the only real difference is that big tobacco lost its version of the lobby fight? Here's hoping we're merely mired in the "ciggies stimulate your T-zone!" phase of a broader future legal and common sense understanding that gambling is indeed harmful.
-
Addictive, money costing, a scam almost pyramidic where many pay and few win, "it's the cool thing!"..Yes, definitely similar. "Two For The Money", the sports gambling movie with Al Pacino showed the dark side of sports gambling, and the destruction it can cause.
-
I'm blown away by how addicted to gambling America is in general. About 15K in my town and there are 3 slot parlors. Also slots in all the bars, and it's less than 10 miles from a full on casino.
-
I feel sports betting is far more harmful to be quite honest, I would rather be around secondhand smoke than Kalshi broskis betting on the most vulnerable people in the world dying each day.
