Strongest earthquake hits Mount Tokachidake; alert raised to Level 3

The strongest volcanic earthquake in the recent sequence struck around 8:20 a.m. Saturday morning. The Japan Meteorological Agency simultaneously raised the eruption alert level from Level 2 to Level 3, the first time Level 3 has been issued for the mountain since the alert system was introduced in 2008. The alert bans entry to the 2,077-meter mountain and warns of large volcanic rocks within about 3 kilometers of the crater.
