Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei says there are "real dangers" to AI, and "for too long the industry lied to people."

IMHO, the AI prophets just made very unrealistic promises in past (like reaching superintelligence "in a few thousand days"). Now, they are trying to reduce the expectations and save their stock price. That's why they made these experiments where AI (predictably) got out of control and now they advocate for slowing down the AI development. The…

They're doing this bc they think they have the only kind of problem they ever admit to having--an image problem, such that ppl don't see how wonderful they are. They're now doing PR to try to change their image b pretending 2B ppl who are willing to slow down & address real problems w AI.

What I don't understand is that folks take it as a fait accompli that models will be built and released that are fundamentally dangerous and that regulation can and should happen downstream of that.I feel like there hasn't been enough discussion of aligning the incentives of the decision makers with that of the public on BUILDING the models. Right…

There are two different but related risks of super intelligence. One is the local competition getting too tense that companies can't afford properly aligning their models. That can be migitated by slowing down the AI development, with the regulation by the government. But that's just half of the AI risk. The other risk is the foreign AIs…

Scoop: Anthropic, Google and OpenAI have been holding regular discussions about creating an AI industry standards body, meeting as recently as this past week even as efforts in the White House stalled. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also discussed moving the idea forward without the government in a company...

I kinda see where the admins are coming from here. I wrote my post as a satirical of the amodeipost without reading more than the title with the aim of playing fun at the idea of "yeah we'll all slow down nudge nudge wink wink" but wanted to say the quiet part (we'll absolutely keep researching) out loud. Half the catgirl ears thing is satire of…

They're not warning. They're bragging, and heading off regulatory oversight. If they don't get their way, they'll just unleash the bots.

> There’s no moatPeople keep saying this, and while it may be partially true, it misses a very important detail. Right now, overall compute is a moat. Someone even commented on another of my comments that one reason Google is lagging is they don't have the same level of Nvidia farms as OpenAI and Anthropic.A big reason that OpenAI and Anthropic…

Might not be so easy to "swoon" the politicians. Gov. Abbott of Texas has cracked down on data centers, saying they must produce their own electricity and not push their needs off onto residential customers. Also James Talarico is running to be a blue Senator in a very red state and is neck and neck with the Republican candidate, with data centers…

New: While Anthropic meets w/ prospective investors ahead of its potentially historic market debut, CEO Dario Amodei is pushing for a slowdown in AI. It's a tough balancing act for a 5-year-old company pursuing a $2 trillion valuation. More w/ @Kr00ney:

This is my read too: they've hit a wall of diminishing returns, they can't produce significantly better models without vastly increasing their already sky high costs. They're trying to spin this to the public, the media and shareholders as a "responsible delay out of safety concerns" when the reality is that they're at the end of the road.
-
J
Color my cynical, but third party evaluators that will get access to determine model safety based on "common safety standards" can be read as code for safety = "closed weight/closed source" models not from China.

AI’s Code-Red Moment https://www. theatlantic.com/technology/202 6/09/dario-amodei-slow-down-ai-save-humanity/688610/ "Four days after a researcher publicly quit his job at Anthropic, warning that top AI firms are not 'acting responsibly' and that their products might be on track to 'kill us all,' the company’s CEO, Dario Amodei, seemed to…

My read: OpenAI & Anthropic have realized they are reaching model capabilities that cannot be monetized -> too risky. Product liability issues.Fundamental control problems with current gen AI are not solved via RFLH. Human knowledge is compressed in weightspace in ways we dont understand. Models are essentially predictors of what humans would…

That super intelligence you mention is AGI. True AGI. We’re nowhere near that. That’s why I think they’re trying to save face by making this announcement to look like the good guys because there wouldn’t be anymore meaningful increases in LLM capabilities for awhile. Don’t get me wrong I think Anthropic out of all the AI companies seems to be the…

the “ai has no real business model” argument is aging remarkably fast. anthropic is already reporting gross margins above 80% and expects two consecutive profitable quarters. and we're still ridiculously early in the adoption curve.
-
meta: I disagree with merging these two posts. though Dario Amodei's post is obviously relevant context, I feel that Xe's satire strikes wider than that. Dario Amodei is not the first AI personality to have argued for this in this kind of tone.
-
You can be assured it is because they fear for their own safety, legacy or wallet. Has nothing to do with humanity.

One thing not getting as much attention re: Dario's essay. In it, he talks about the need for third party evaluators to review models for safety. But a few days before the essay, Anthropic... refused to submit its latest models to the UK's evaluator: www.ft.com/content/560e... RE…

The problem is that, as seen in the case of the Houthi rebels developing missile software using Claude Code, AI has lowered the very threshold at which human cruelty or selfishness can be put into practice. Anthropic’s safeguards were applied on a per-request basis, but splitting the work into multiple sessions prevented me from seeing the bigger…

I’m kind of in the middle. We don’t know what it could do. I’m not sure I believe in the idea of self-improving AI. OpenAI & Anthropic both have it as an objective but no one has shown how it might work. At the same time I think there may be a case for better regulation because even without self-improving AI there is a risk that lack of control…
