Respondents describe tactics to force restaurants to provide paper menus

Several commenters reported successfully requesting printed menus by claiming no smartphone, flat battery, or poor internet—or simply refusing to use QR codes and walking out if alternatives were unavailable.
“I tell them i dont have a smart phone, please can i borrow yours. They find a print out pretty quickly.”

If I can’t get a regular menu I’m out the door. I have essential tremor. Try negotiating a QR Code with that. Should be an ADA issue.
-
I honestly think I would get up and walk out if a restaurant needed me to verify my phone number. Come to think of it, unless it’s like a food truck, I’m refusing qr menus from now on. Bring me a real one or I’m leaving.

Very nice with spam, spam, spam, spam, egg and beans

“The customer is always right… but there’s no accounting for taste.” There’s articles out there that gen AI food has an uncanny valley effect and turns customer appetites off 💁♀️ TBH if you’re charging $20+ for a burger, then don’t show pictures on the menu—fancy restaurants don’t include images.

I did the same! lol, worked like a charm!
-
The trick is to tell them your battery is flat or the internet's not working on your phone. If they don't give you a physical menu, that restaurant doesn't deserve your money. Ordering via QR code can get bent as far as I'm concerned.

Annoying, but in place because women showing apartments kept getting assaulted.
-
I hate this QR code menu practice too, it might save the restaurant the cost of printing paper menus but when I go out for a meal, I don’t want to be getting my phone out just to access the menu. The mere thought makes me want to leave & go somewhere where I can get away from technology for awhile.
-
I refuse: I ask for a regular menu. They don’t have one? I get up and walk out.
-
I'm sick of having to download an apps to my phone in order to get anything done! I've started to rebel and refuse to download anymore apps.
-
Me too! I'm an excellent cook & baker. I can't tell you the last time we ate out and we never eat fast food.
-
Just walk out. There are many options that don't include qr codes

S
Walk out of restaurants with QR code menus before ordering?
-
I can't wait until the someday, when a gen-whatever-at-that-time Re-discovers the business model of a basic, sit-down restaurant with real menus, genuines service & real food, then is lauded as a genius
-
I refuse to do it & ask for a written menu. So far it’s worked. Part of going to a restaurant is the service. I tip between 20 & 25% but they better bring me a menu, take my order & serve my meal.
-
We the consumers can shut this shit down if we refuse to use and encourage people younger than us to do the same before they believe it’s always been this way.
-
and now your phone number is being resold, resold, resold, resold...all for a crappy meal you paid for so they can sell your personal data.
-
Are there food trucks which don't have their menu prominently displayed?
-
If they have a QR code instead of a menu I walk out
-
I don't even use cell phones. QR codes remind me of the spit tattoos we used to get in candy wrappers when I was a kid. Even if I used this technology, I would never just click on something if I cannot know the details. Hope you enjoyed the Spam...
-
I don’t use them. I ask for a server. If they don’t have l don’t stay. Just my preference of going out being served is part of the experience of NOT cooking and cleaning dishes at home. No. I don’t use them. Another way to take away human jobs. .
-
I’m just getting sick of everything all together. I miss watching actual tv but now you literally have to pay for everything even if you want to watch sports. It’s kind of annoying.
-
I did that 40 years ago in a steak place in Arkansas. You picked your own cut of beef from a cooler and carried it to a grilling pit where you cooked it to your preference.
