Since Schmidt (and with the exception of Merkel who was fortunate with the world economy booming and things being mostly peaceful), every chancellor has been the worst in public opinion. I'm not super fond of Merz, but he at least tries to push through reforms that should have been started decades ago. For that, he has my respect.

merkel could have done a lot better. a lot. but covid wasn't her fault and the full-scale invasion of ukraine happened after her. she's also not responsible for foreign actors and billion-dollar algorithms hyping up racism in times of crises. the whole immigration topic is grotesquely misrepresented and overblown.
