Slow-moving thunderstorms broke out Wednesday afternoon over Castilla-La Mancha before moving to Spain's east coast. Torrential rainfall, strong winds, and large hail hit Valencia and Barcelona overnight, with weather stations recording over 100mm of rain in a few hours and 70mm in 30 minutes in some areas. Cars and roads were submerged, and flights were cancelled across the region.
“With the Mediterranean Sea reaching record temperatures, this is providing extra fuel and moisture to thunderstorms, making flooding more likely.”
