New York Times investigation reveals AI-powered influence campaigns by China, Iran, Israeli firms

The New York Times published an investigation documenting how state-backed groups in China and Iran, and Israeli private firms, used open-source AI models to create autonomous agents that operated thousands of fake social media accounts. The AI agents autonomously created fake profiles on Instagram, Facebook, X, and TikTok, then populated them with false political content to influence discourse.
“Agent-led campaigns will likely become more common as the technology spreads. Agents can be fairly sophisticated, and so in addition to just scale, they have an ability to blend in and look more like a human user.”
