Cholla cactus as this appears to be is nasty in every way possible. You can only carefully pry it off, an wide tooth comb is a good tool. When pods break off and turn brown, they're very hard to see on the ground. We called them 'jumpin Cholla' for the way they so easily attach to you.

Ouch. Chollas hurt like hell and are hard to remove. Pro tip: Using a knife is not the best method. Use a simple hair comb to do it. Desert savvy outdoors-people always carry a comb with them when venturing into the SW desert.

So good! It appears the hawk knows it's being helped. Not uncommon. A few years ago, there was a story here of a starving sea eagle wrapped in fishing line seeking help from a bloke having his lunch on the beach. (more to come)
