Senator Castañeda of the Movimiento Ciudadano party announced a proposal backed by representatives from other parties, including Ignacio Mier of the ruling Morena party, to restore the system and enshrine it in Mexican law. Castañeda said he and colleagues invited Liga MX president Francisco Iturbide and Mexican football commissioner Mikel Arriola to the debate, and both declined.
