Public sector net borrowing in August reached £18.3 billion (£24.5 billion USD), exceeding all economist forecasts in a Reuters poll which had predicted £15.5 billion. The August-to-date cumulative deficit for the 2026/27 financial year stands at £77.3 billion, £8.1 billion higher than the Office for Budget Responsibility expected.
