The amigaux.org website describes the modernization effort as a hobby compilation of projects to make Amiga Unix more accessible on newer Amiga hardware. The site explicitly acknowledges heavy AI use in development, noting that many components rely on it and that 'without it, most of what's here simply wouldn't be realistic, or motivating, in the time we have available.'

I mean, Debian 3.1 (sarge) supported Amiga hardware. The support was dropped in 2007 (the next release), because not enough people were maintaining it. I would assume that it would be easier to re-start that effort, unless compatibility with actual Amix was important for some reason?
