It wasn't just going without port visits! There was a lack of fresh food, drinking water, mail service, and soap, toothpaste, and deodorant. The facilities had deteriorated because of lack of maintenance: showers were moldy, toilets broken, and laundry facilities were out of service for weeks.

When I did my psych nursing rotation in a military hospital, I noticed the majority of the clients were Navy. Removing people from family and social supports and stuffing them into a sub or boat exposes subclinical mental health issues. Stress, loneliness are real problems.

Sailors attempting suicide should be a red flag for the Navy. The fact that they did not succeed should be a wakeup call for better mental health services not more testosterone.

Don’t discount arm, fuel, launch, retrieve, & maintenance, operations either. Everyone is busting their ass to make all that happen. If you’re ALL doing that, maintenance work gets put off. When unreps are restricted to ammunition, fuel, & critical parts, all the rest will be on the “NEXT” ship.

My heart breaks seeing this happen again. During COVID, 11 USS George Washington sailors—average age 24—died by suicide during its prolonged overhaul. I was in support groups with active-duty members and mothers who lost their sons; my heart is with these families.

"None died." That's all Cao had to say? That's supposed to be...what...? It's certainly not a "nothing was wrong with the way the Navy handled the situation'' response.
