Research details unique quadruple-peaked emission line signatures

Further analysis reveals that the system exhibits quadruple-peaked emission line profiles from two separate gaseous rings, unlike all 21 previously known gas disks around white dwarfs which show double-peaked profiles. The discovery challenges current models of debris disk formation and evolution.
“Unlike in similar systems previously found, the debris—the leftovers of planets that once orbited the star—is organized in a double disk, the two parts separated by a clear gap.”

A dying star 1,600 light-years from Earth is surrounded by two rings of gas and dust that astronomers believe are the remnants of the planetary bodies it once hosted.

This is the part that really sticks with me — a dead star still holding on to planetary leftovers. When a Sun-like star becomes a white dwarf, it can shred asteroids and small bodies that wander too close, and that debris forms a ring like this. It makes you wonder how much of our own outer Solar System could survive the Sun's red giant phase and…
