Science is not bad, but certain populistic assumptions like "Average human will get mad without a crowd!", "Average human will not be able to stand a year without sex!" are obviously lame but somehow reappear quite often. There are thousands of people on Earth that live in isolation at any given moment. From Antarctic expeditions and astronauts…

I don’t think there’s any doubt people can do it. The studies exist to find out what the negative impacts are, and what can be done to mitigate them. Your examples actually make that case. Submarine crews and polar winter-over teams are exactly the groups where researchers have documented sleep disruption, mood changes, and interpersonal friction…

That's not new. We know there are many toxic things on Martian soil and some are carcinogenic. The general M.O. for manned missions on other worlds has always prioritized keeping outside dirt out as much as possible and not come into contract with it. Learned that from the Apollo missions where lunar regolith was especially dangerous to breathe in…

You expect redditors to read the article? Most here don't have a PhD, but pretend they do. Most live in their mom's basement and just have the most pessimistic view imaginable on any possible issue. This was a funded study by extremely qualified scientists and participants who were volunteers who were also highly qualified ( not exploited for…

They arent just testing "do people go crazy in this situation?" They're getting information on the human factors that will affect the success of a mission to mars. That's a lot cheaper to test on earth before you spend billions sending people to the other side of the solar system

I see it a lot.. ive used it before. While this subject is a bit more board i think the overall referal to it being a reddit thing is that this place tends to be a echo chamber. So weir opinions exist only on reddit and not anywhere else.. hence a reddit moment.

For some reason I can’t help but think that the Russians or the Chinese would see that as Level 1 and find some way to make it much harder and realistic with zero way they could exit the situation in those 378 days.

More than 1/2 a dozen people die from lightning strikes. The part you appear to have not noticed is how many people are climbing Everest, vs walking in a park, vs being outside during a thunderstorm.
-
So many examples of this. Crossing the seas, submarines, flight, going to the moon. Countless people have died against the elements. Mars will be no different.

Are you seriously comparing these situations to being stuck on another, hostile planet that cannot support life?
