MBARI announced the barreleye sighting, noting it marks the first 4K documentation of the species and the first observation from the institute's new flagship research vessel. The last recorded sighting was in 2021. The footage captures the fish's transparent head shield and its characteristic upward-scanning behaviour for hunting prey in the deep ocean twilight zone.
