A research team led by Professor Jordi Martorell at ICFO in Barcelona describes converting solar cells into an optical cavity that limits photon emission losses, with author Francisco Bernal Texca saying the design could push efficiencies close to 43%, above the 33.7% Shockley-Queisser limit.
“the simplicity of the cavity cell design does not introduce any additional fabrication complexity, unlike many of the approaches currently being explored to surpass the Shockley–Queisser limit”
