STAR experiment detects quark-gluon plasma in low-energy oxygen collisions

Researchers at the RHIC found strong evidence of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) formed by colliding oxygen nuclei at nearly the speed of light at substantially lower energies than previously known to produce such matter. The detection was confirmed through jet quenching—high-energy particles losing energy as they travel through the collision material.
“The QGP is believed to be the form of matter that filled the early universe — before the protons and neutrons that make up today's atoms formed.”
