The National Disaster Management Agency opened Monday as Japan's first Cabinet-level agency since the Digital Agency in 2021. Headquartered in Tokyo and headed by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, it will coordinate disaster preparedness and response across ministries and local governments.
“The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) is designed to function as a centralized control tower to direct disaster preparedness and response efforts by boosting coordination across ministries and local governments, particularly in the event of a major disaster in the Tokyo metropolitan area.”
