The New York Times reveals that Anthropic has undertaken multiple deals to obtain computing capacity, working with tech giants and former crypto miners to secure 3.5GW or more in expected capacity for 2026. The reporting details that the company is expanding direct hardware procurement to include Nvidia and AMD.
“The company went on a deal spree with tech giants, former crypto miners and others to obtain one of the artificial intelligence boom's scarcest resources.”

All flying is jet fuel (gasoline). The thinking is we take all the Dino juice and give it to Datacenter SIth overlord. In the hopes that Datacenter sith will solve climate change. Other than or it escapes Earth, steals our tech and leaves us to wither away on a dying planet. US squandered away their lead on cheap nuclear and cheap solar. Gasoline…

Anthropic is has been on a deal spree to secure enough compute: - Spending hundreds of billions on Microsoft, Amazon, Google and SpaceX - Partnering w/ former crypto miners to build new data centers - Meeting with developers to source land and power - And even exploring converting old coal plants...

On raw power buildout, I think China does have a real advantage. It had 2.52 TW of renewables installed by September and renewables supplied 41.8% of generation. The catch is that national capacity isn’t the same as firm power at the exact data center location. Reuters is already reporting grid and reliability problems around China’s AI loads, so…

Honestly, I don't see "AI demand" going down or even plateuing soon. If anything, it will accelerate. Cost-savings and even the enabling of use cases that were just imagined but not tried, is big, imo. I have invested in utilities and nuclear energy etfs expecting that energy demand will go up which is happening. Let's see.

There’s not just one bottleneck. Many have known for months now that power is a bottleneck but it’s not the only bottleneck. There is more than one bottleneck. Many of the power stocks actually have higher PEs than the chip stocks. PWR for example with a PE of 49. That’s higher than MRVLs PE.
-
Yes where have you been. And no renewables won’t do it. These things run more energy than a city. Solar and wind won’t produce that type of power. Show me a 1 gw solar farm? Also they need consistent power not something that goes off at night or in calm skies.
-
Sure, it’s possible but is it realistic and does it solve the immediate problem. Answer is no. Maybe 10 yrs from now they can switch but you won’t see renewables as part of the discussion for a long time. It’s just not practical or economical at this point.
-
Renewables definitely help, but AI data centers need 24/7 firm power, not just cheap generation. Anthropic going this hard into gas tells me reliability and speed to power are still the bigger bottlenecks right now.
-
I think the point is there are possibilities with renewables. US just doesn’t have the structural setup to get it done, whether it’s state vs federal or education/awareness gap or whatever else.
-
Dominion just completed a 2.6 gigawatt offshore wind farm. Hydro Quebec powers much of New England. Those are both massive renewable power sources more than capable of powering data centers.
-
By “the world” you mean the US right? Because China is kicking our ass on power availability, including renewables. If power is going to be the true AI bottleneck, China’s in a great spot
-
Power being the bottleneck isn’t new. Anthropic cutting out intermediaries and taking over $3.4B of generator orders directly is. That’s a pretty different level of urgency.
-
Yeah, several. China’s Midong project is 3.5 GW, and Reuters noted two other Chinese solar projects at 3 GW each. So scale isn’t really the issue here, firm 24/7 output is
-
Dont republicans also vote heavily against it in their communities? They will build regardless of dems, foolish comment. Dems have nothing to do with compute commitments.
-
I wonder how they're going to square that with carbon emissions. We'll all be driving electric vehicles and all the data centers will be running on gas generators.
-
The annual production of gas turbines is limited, even with infine money you cannot create one out of thin air, and setting up new production lines takes years
-
Very few outside EU and Reddit are still worried about emissions The great majority of newly elected Democrats welcome ALL sources of energy generation
-
Look at General Electric and literally every other gas engine or electricity company trading at all time high lol. No one’s “just realizing” this…
-
No, the biggest potential bottleneck as of Thursday is the lawmakers who are trying to secure the trust and votes of democrat voters
-
And the world is still sleeping on renewable energy, that could generate enough for AI shit if we would start properly using it.
-
Yes because there could be some new legislation soon that data centers must have their own power to power their centers.
-
They will be ordered to invest some percentage of the revenue into the electricity supply chain.
-
It was 10,000 acres big. So now you got to find 13,000-15,000 acres for a data center.
