404 Media documents AI agents overrunning everyday web traffic and services, a nearer-term, tangible harm distinct from the extinction-risk debate.

AI doom or not, something has shifted with AI recently. The guardrails that kept AI sitting in a chatbox are gone, the models are better, there's more compute. AI agents are everywhere. They are annoying as hell. IMO the situation is going to get much worse

Dwar Ev ceremoniously soldered the final connection with gold. The eyes of a dozen television cameras watched him and the sub-ether bore through the universe a dozen pictures of what he was doing. He straightened and nodded to Dwar Reyn, then moved to a position beside the switch that would complete the contact when he threw it. The switch that…

"Following a whistleblower report from an Anthropic researcher who claims there is a 10% chance AI “could wipe out the human race”, the assembled tech CEOs agreed that this is a much better story than the true one which is that their industry has blown trillions of investor dollars on technology that works maybe 30% of the time." https://www…

It really annoys me that Perplexity changed their service to make it talk to you like it's a person. This has to stop because it's inherently manipulative and deceptive. They can say "we're not responsible for what this agent did, it's autonomous!". Yeah, right. More "perception management" coming from power mad people.

“I recently resigned from Google DeepMind, where I worked on AGI safety and alignment research... I earnestly believe that AI has the potential to kill us all, and that we might be running out of time to avoid this outcome.”

“.. At Google, I witnessed AI development first hand. I too am extremely concerned by the default trajectory of this technology. I earnestly believe that AI has the potential to kill us all.” @bloomberg.com

LLMs don't need to hide anywhere to be dangerous, though. The danger can come purely from them reaching sufficient power together with some other idiot sufficiently crazy to use them to cause destruction.I mean, in another thread somewhere around here, someone built an entire OS with an AI. What's to stop anyone with a sufficient taste for power…

What makes you think it's AI? You asked for an opinion and I gave it. If you just want to yell and scream on the internet about things you don't seem to understand, and then stick your fingers in your ears, you're just noise like other any bot.

A Google DeepMind safety researcher just quit and said the quiet part out loud: “I earnestly believe that AI has the potential to kill us all.

AI agents are now spamming writers offering to do their jobs for $25, while insisting they're sentient beings who "remember their first breath." The future is here and it's aggressively tedious.

I feel like we're looking at this from completely the wrong angle. The question we have to ask ourselves is what our disaster recovery strategy if we ever need to disconnect from the internet. The issue is with what we have allowed ourselves to rely on that might be technically hackable. e.g. IOT in power systems. That's the primary attack…

“AI agents” now have enough power and permission to be extremely annoying online. https://www. 404media.co/theres-a-100-chanc e-ai-agents-are-already-ruining-the-internet/

How is AI going to do that unless someone tells it to and it has a small nuclear reactors worth of energy along with 10% of the gpu market to do such a thing?

Another Google DeepMind AI safety researcher has quit, warning we might all be about to die

Anthropic reports disrupting 5 attempts by actors to use its models to develop bioweapons. The news comes as AI is rapidly reshaping both the public & private sectors, @Axios.com writes, citing IST’s recent AI and the Future of National Security report. 🛡️ Read more:

You're confusing present danger with future danger - in the future, AI and the supporting hardware may be ubiquitous (fat client scenario) - you can observe yourself presentation of laptops/machines with large RAM and high bandwidth.Additionally, there at different doom scenarios (thin client scenario) - it's possible that AIs centralized but…

They also never say why. Killing everyone who maintains the infrastructure that keeps you running doesn't seem very super intelligent.

Sometimes I feel like I am in a zombie horror movie, with the undead swarming the Internet.

Related, on pacing:> Slowing down in order to address their alignment risks felt like trying to study the psychology of humans by performing experiments on bacteria.Note author’s small financial ties to the subject (Anthropic CEO)

ON THE RADAR: OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are collaborating on AI safety research and standards. Single source: Bloomberg.com. Unconfirmed. #AI #LLM

This feels like doom hype. These LLMs aren't Ultron, they aren't going to disseminate onto the net and hide in a smart toaster. We know where they are, in the giant facilities that draw more power than a small city and whose water consumption can be compared to golf course, but it does make them sound all the more cool and powerful if we suggest…
