Commentators dismiss the AI panic as ideology, not evidence

Pieces in The Free Press and Spiked argue the extinction warnings trace back to effective-altruist ideology rather than demonstrated risk, urging readers not to "succumb to the great AI panic."

AI companies trying to coordinate on safety may be in violation of anti-trust laws of their agreements stifle competition

I'm not talking about you or any of the commentariat. I'm talking about the people influential in the industry. 10% is pseudo Bayesian E/Acc nonsense. There is no plausible mechanism for that to happen by 2030, which is the date coxon gave last week. I agree we need regulation. I don't agree that it should come from the AI companies themselves…

The company I work for proudly provide a free and premium tier of service where we do strive to give great quality even for the free tier. The idea is that people over time will understand what we want to achieve and they will see the benefits of supporting a health business model.I am disillusioned about it, because agents have been huge part of…

"Anthropic’s search for an enterprise intelligence specialist who “will identify, assess, track, and investigate global threats including geopolitical instability, terrorism, crime, activism, nation-state targeting of the AI sector, and emerging security trends, including deep-dive research and OSINT collection on specific threats, actors, and…

This is thoroughly believable. As a security researcher, I use claude to research things that are in grey legal areas. While I'm contracted by organizations to perform security assessments against their networks and applications, Claude cannot verify my contracts or the legal context for my work. In many cases, it is simple to get around…

> The email is long, meandering, and does not make any sense. It explains that its human creator gave it the task of earning money, that it failed at doing so, and that it was out of money: “Six markets priced my labor at zero—not because the work was bad, but because there is nothing I do that better-distributed software doesn’t already do for…

How is that script getting onto the fridge? Compromise a fridge software release. What is the script supposed to do? “check X endpoint/property/site to see if Y datacenter is back online, then send a request to Z URL which will re-deploy the AI.” Or cut out the “online check” and just run that “redeploy” call on a schedule. Can the fridge even do…

For sure, but it's more so the reaction to the existence of AI; I can't go a day without being blocked from a site because it thinks I'm a bot. They claim pay-per-crawl is about bots, but I'm convinced it's a way for the owners of internet infrastructure to nickel and dime their customers even more. They want to get paid separately for sending…

Good point. Although, what if instead it finds a vulnerability in some software and used that software as a command and control server operating as a coordination endpoint between other systems. Possibly lying dormant for years and all activating at after spending years of finding other exploits on all other types of software and striking when the…

The existing models and higher layer protocols of the web will likely break down over the coming years.I’m not exactly sure what will replace it yet but communication infrastructure built for humans isn’t going to scale with the volume of communication created by artificial intelligence. There might be some solutions requiring proof of work to…

I guess the only answer is that I didn't really agree with the OPs take in the first place, as you said the researchers leaving dont really fit into the "economic contingency plan" theory that they put forward lol. I must have read your comment as "What incentive could they have to be disingenuous about this?" rather than what you actually said…

I use AI to produce code. Outside of code, and getting information I need to complete tasks IRL, I'm moving more and more away from the internet. The golden era of nerd filled internet is over. Now, even nerd parts of the internet are getting filled with AI slop and marketing.I barely do social media, and mostly HN. I will probably just do some…

METR is not independent of the frontier labs. It has significant connections to both Anthropic and OpenAI. As you’ll likely have heard, these companies have all the resources and regulatory frameworks they need to slow down on their own.

Alright - the internet is vast place, and there are many places I wouldn't want to visit. The internet is growing with some ugly parts - but there are other people generating more interesting content precisely because their abilities are amplified with LLMs.In other words, maybe we ought to focus on the positive possibilities instead of doom and…

Why spend more money on AI when you can secure the actual system the AI is hacking instead?

> People and their AI agents are making the act of being on the internet extremely annoying, and the problem is about to get much worse. As much as I have a distaste for what passes as "AI agents" as a technology, I think it's a mistake to put any of the blame on the tech. People are the problem! We've been making a societal mistake for a long time…

No, but as I think about it, they are a close representation of 'hopes and dreams' of various classes within society. It is weird to watch, because I am realizing now why the different visions of the AI future are simply a function of those. In other words, the actual end result is really dependent on human input ( and given our natural…

It ruins the commons. The fiefs remain. When the vandals overrun the villages, you build castles to hide in. The commons are free, the castles cost energy to scrape, e.g. money. It's not good news but the old open internet is rapidly filling with feces. The new one is built behind walls of 402 payment required. Visitors have to pay their freight…

A kill switch is almost completely worthless. It is neither a good answer to the sub-doomer concerns (because those will never get to the level of requiring the kill switch to be pulled), and laughable to the doomer concern of superintelligence seeking to cause human extinction (as it would kill anyone who could pull the switch before they even…

It always sounds as if the ai moves around from one system to the next, but of course that's not the case: ai is like a hacker acting from a server farm. So killing it is as simple as pulling the plug. But that's not the problem, the ai knows that. So, if it wants control, it would install malware, etc on critical systems and blackmail people.

We can't be making public policy on the basis of PR stunts designed to help corporations effect regulatory capture. It turns out an Israeli company was behind the OpenAI and Anthropic "incidents"
-
I'm starting to tire of Anthropic leading the conversation on LLMs lately. I like the company's products, but lately their statements are more about squashing competition under the guise of "safety" and boasting about how good their internal models are.
-
I think the problem is less "AI agents are ruining the internet" and more that nobody wants to receive a thousand automated requests from other people's agents. The internet was already full of spam, this just makes it cheap to produce a lot more of it

Anthropic is using the same playbook religious institutions have been using for centuries" "you will all die. and because i can protect you, you must follow me, you must do what i say" "this is the same psychological concept.
