My grandmother’s homemade bread and butter pickles tasted like summer. They are for lunch with crackers, grilled cheese, and tomato soup. Dills are for hamburgers, etc. they are different foods.

I worked at a kosher deli/bakery in high-school way back in the '70s. They made their own pickles. Each table had a basket of their rolls, (pumpernickel, rye and white) butter and a bowl of sliced up pickles. Omg, I loved that place!! The pickles were fresh, crisp, slightly garlicky and nummy!

My aunt’s potato salad recipe requires candied dill pickles, which have all but vanished. Sweet gherkins are a pale sub but the closest thing I’ve found.
