Lord Harris, chairman of the National Preparedness Commission, told LBC that Britons need to build a culture of self-reliance for major national emergencies when power, water, communications, and financial systems may be unavailable. He warned that widespread electricity failure would cascade to disable mobile networks, water pumps, sewage systems, and electronic payments.
“There tends to be a situation that 'they', unspecified who they are, will sort it out. And if it's taking more than about 15 minutes, people get really irate and worked up about it.”

Indeed, I grew up surrounded by USAF bases, several of which were known to house nukes, so it would have been a fairly slow grim ending, as too far away from the blast zone, but right in the radiation zone. These days, people need to prepare for flooding, power cuts, natural gas shortages, etc, but I doubt that the majority of people even posses…

I live on an island so I have been stocking an extra couple of tins with every weekly shop for a while, just in case we ever get cut off from the mainland for any reason. If anything does happen I know I’m going to be so sick of tinned sardines within a week. Wife calls it my fish tower.
