I remember covering an event - about 100 years ago - on the Internet of Things, it was going to be the next new thing. Even then I wondered if I would ever want an alert to learn that the milk in my fridge had past its use by date, only to ignore it

>Or to take the freezers offline if an update isn't available. Why the heck would this be necessary? We have VPNs holy crap, the entire genesis of the technology was to solve this fucking problem. If it's not literally intended for the general random public to be able to randomly visit and use themselves, it shouldn't be exposed on the public…

There is special hardware for remote iot/ ot stuff too allow secure access. There are many approaches. Where I used to work, we had a requirement for a fully secured VPN before we wanted to make a contract for remote support and hotline. It's of course a little easier to sell something like that, when the complete delivery is in the hundreds of…

BREAKING: This morning’s cyberattack against supermarket fridges and freezers has now spread to Belgium, Sweden, Luxembourg and Estonia. The hackers increased the temperature up to 50C. Food worth millions of euros has been spoiled. Experts warn that such cyberattacks on

If you have not believed me when I regularly state orgs do not care a whit abt "cyber”, the successful attacks on freezer control units in both Sweden and Belgium should help you adjust to that reality. There were confirmed attacks with real impact in France (that made "real news" headlines), and the "how" was known, but the compan[y|ies] that…

I'm extrapolating a bit here based on Reddit hearsay, but I think this may have to do with rural stores having essentially consumer-grade internet routers connected to the mobile broadband network.Much of the coverage in Swedish media drives the point that only 4G-uplinked stores have been hit so far. I think that's unfortunate, because really it…

Cyber security should now be taught in schools along science and literature. A new generation of kids who don't know the different between internet and WiFi aren't going to make it without basic understanding of the world around them. But also let's stop connecting our flippin refrigerators to the internet, mmkay.

BREAKING: Estonia is now the latest country hit by a cyberattack targeting supermarket refrigeration systems, following incidents reported this morning in Belgium, Sweden, and Luxembourg. Hackers reportedly accessed the control system of a large supermarket chain and remotely

Back in 1995 this was so improbable it was one of the purported negative effects of the "Good Times" virus which was a parody of the virus warning e-mails that were being forwarded around at the time. Computers still can't give you Dutch elm disease, fortunately.> It will recalibrate your refrigerator's coolness setting so all your ice cream goes…

It's actually funny that a few years ago everything was being made "smart" and "had an app!"unnecessarily. Like smart washing machines and dishwashers and fridges. Now Ai has made hacking more risky we will all suffer the consequences of this.

Cyberattacks overnight disrupted refrigeration systems at supermarkets in Sweden, Belgium and Luxembourg, causing extreme temperatures and heavy damage to stored food. Some ICA stores in Sweden had units remotely set to 50°C. In Belgium, units at over 40 Delhaize, 15 Carrefour and around 5 Spar s...

I am hereby renaming these attacks to the "Not Hot Dog" attacks. Because, why the fuck does a fridge need an IP stack? https:// securityaffairs.com/202260/sec urity/another-fridge-cyberattack-hits-european-supermarkets-this-time-in-belgium-luxembourg-sweden-and-estonia.html

There was an interview with an angry store manager, he's mad at the attackers, but I didn't hear the media ask him why they didn't improve security after the French attacks. Only now do they appear to want to start a review of their monitoring system.

It's a thermostat. The freezer has no heating element to actually raise the temperature inside to 50 Celsius. They just told the freezers not to cool unless the temperature exceeds 50 C. The hackers just turned to freezers off.

They deserve to get burned and should get a hefty fine as well. I'm fed up with businesses completely ignoring all basic security and then blaming culprits for hacking them.I don't care whether it's the Russians, Chinese, Norks or script kiddies. This should never have happened, especially since a similar incident happened in France three weeks…

I have responsibility of 11 restaurants. Different typ of fridges. Its basicly rooms and the cooling machines are somewhere else. We can only see the temp in the rooms and get alarms, not adjust the cooling

There has been a large cyber attack on Swedish supermarket chains which have turned of refrigerators of many stores leading to food rotting a similar cyber attack happened recently in France with sources suspecting Russian involvement.

This first happened in France over three weeks ago. It's unforgivable that many chains have failed to update their software in time. Or to take the freezers offline if an update isn't available.I now read some interviews with local chains in Sweden and Finland, and they were still just investigating what to do at this point.
