NPR investigated cyberattacks on the digital devices that control industrial refrigerators, revealing the extent to which operational technology is exposed to damage and disruption.

A certain large country to the east of Europe is testing Europe's resilience and has been doing so for many years in various ways. That's one reason. The other is to panic people, to make them afraid. Along with other tactics - broader cyberattacks on governments and corporations, attacks on transport and energy infrastructure, disinformation…

Apparently the freezers are EOL, and should not be connected to the internet. On top of that several (if not all) had the factory password 12345 on them. So there might not be anything to investigate. Someone logged into the webinterface, used the password and changed the settings. Probably these things dont even have proper auditlogs. Russia does…

Why are these refrigeration systems connected to a 4G network, they should be self containedv controllers in each store. If temperatures move out of a certain range. Alarms should activate and sent to a central control point. Today industry uses SCADA, a real time control system that would be part of their wider security system monitored 24/7

I'm not claiming it was the same person did both or all of the attacks. It just looks much more probable (since the selection looks random) that it was not coordinated or orchestrated. These are not my own words, but rather those of a security consultant interviewed at prime time news yesterday in Swedish news media.

I expect they get scared once they set fire to their school and realise the actual implications. This is not the same as hacktivism. This type of attack really requires no knowledge at all, just downloading and executing a script someone else presented, similar to buying a box of matches.
-
Why not "keep" the secret until you can disrupt everything at once? It's a low-hanging fruit and not that impactful. Whoever the attacker is may have more powerful exploits ready but will "burn" only a toy-level attack tool to signal they are there.

Blowing Nordstream is a useful act in this war : It hurts the Russian economy. Pirating fridges in EU is not useful for Ukraine. It would be in Russia, but it seems Ukraine choose a more "kinetic" way to do that.

Right? I wish a hardware switch for the networkcard in these things was a requirement. My appliances do not need network access thank you very much.

and to be fair - it scares me silly. Nukes on left of us, nukes on the right - and we`ll be stuck with the impact :(

Belize maybe? I heard Djibouti is out for our freezers as well? Honestly I’m as much in the dark as you!

It’s Russia and it’s because evil cannot comprehend not being evil for the sake of it.
