Sort of self explanatory I'd think. Unlike chairs and garden hoses, and much more like health care, education, and basic sustenance, access to unbiased factual information is necessary to the health of a democracy and it's people. The alternative is public funding with public oversight.

Newspapers have always been sustained by both advertising and subscriptions, for decades. Relying just on advertising is not enough to income to field a newsroom. The early 2000s demonstrated this. Relying just on subscriptions results in an inaccessible price.
