Former FTC chair Lina Khan, NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Sen. Bernie Sanders publicly condemned the move as monopoly abuse, and former Google director Tracy Frey launched a petition to keep AI out of schools.

JUST IN: Google announces schools that completely ban AI will also lose access to Google Search.

Google claims it will disable AI tools for K-12 student accounts in 2027 unless schools opt in. The catch? Schools that completely restrict Google’s AI tools will also lose access to Google Search.

google says they'll start withholding their search from schools that don't embrace AI

As usual, the truth is a little less clickbaity. It's just opt-in:https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/educatio...> We believe schools should have control over AI in their classrooms and in providing administrators with controls to help them manage their approach. After listening to schools, teachers, leading researchers, and…

BREAKING: Google will turn off Search entirely for schools that opt out of its AI features, per The New York Times. Schools can’t disable Google’s AI Overviews or AI Mode on their own. Now, if they reject AI, they lose Search altogether, per NYT

Google: Forces AI on everyone, even school children. DuckDuckGo: Lets people choose if they want AI in search results.

“Google announced Tuesday that early next year it would turn off artificial intelligence tools in its popular software for K-12 students, unless school administrators explicitly choose to make such tools available. “But there is a catch: Schools that choose to restrict A.I. entirely will also lose access to Google search.” https://www…

Somewhat related: did you know that you cannot disable GMail's GenAI usage without disabling the traditional ML powered features, such as smart inbox, which predates LLMs? In this case, Google/Alphabet is conflating GenAI/LLMs with traditional machine learning, so you can't opt out of genai which necessarily requires access to your data by the…

Students in schools that reject Google’s AI will see notices that Search isn’t available.

Duck Duck Go is a good alternative to Google search.

EAT YOUR SLOP CHILDREN, OR YOU CAN'T HAVE ANY PUDDING “Google announced Tuesday that early next year it would turn off artificial intelligence tools in its popular software for K-12 students, unless school administrators explicitly choose to make such tools available. “But there is a catch: Schools that choose to restrict A.I. entirely will also…

I think we've reached a point where reading the AI summary (which I think is Gemini Flash Lite) is probably going to be more reliable than actually reading the top 10 search results. The top 10 search results were often blogspam even in a pre-AI world. I feel like either you trust Google to retrieve information or you don't (and Gemini has…

So they should all dump Google and mayhaps go with Duck Duck go?

New. So Google now resorts to blackmailing kids? How fitting. Maybe this is exactly what schools need to dump Google search in the nearest garbage bin. "Google announced Tuesday that early next year it would turn off artificial intelligence tools in its popular software for K-12 students, unless school administrators explicitly choose to make such…

I'm confused, so google made websites indirectly unusable with all the advertisement incentives and then the AI summary came that usually just summarizes some reddit posts and now they subtly and indirectly block universities from using their entire search engine because unis block the AI part of search? What incentive does google even have on…

These fuckers "Google announced Tuesday that early next year it would turn off artificial intelligence tools in its popular software for K-12 students, unless school administrators explicitly choose to make such tools available. Executives at the tech giant said they wanted to be responsive to educators and parents who have asked for more control…

I know they’re not marketing to schools yet, but kagi.com is available for libraries. I expect they’ll try to break into the school market eventually.https://kagi.com/librariesIt’s a good time to break free from Google and try something else. I’ve been using kagi for a couple years and I haven’t looked back. Not a shill.. I just like the service.

I switched my default search to DuckDuckGo a few years ago, and frankly I don't miss not using Google

"A.I. features are now a standard part of Google’s commercially available search engine. “Search and A.I. are deeply integrated,” said Chris Phillips, vice president for education at Google. If a school has banned A.I., he added, students “will not have access to search, and they’ll see a message from their school that indicates it’s not…

If this truly is just the search engine and not other stuff on the google.com domain like OAuth login, then this seems rather unimportant.Search is easily Google's least-sticky and most replaceable product. The only reason it gets more usage that other engines like DuckDuckGo and the swathes of other Bing frontends is because it's the default and…

Duck duck go has the perfect name for kids

Google to schools: We'll turn off AI by default, but that also means turning off Search. If school IT admins are smart: DuckDuckGo.com or Qwant.com or any of a dozen other search engines. Google can pound sand if they're going to not even try hiding that they are being evil. https:// arstechnica.com/ai/2026/11/goo…

Kind of makes sense, given how integrated Gemini summaries are to Google Search, last I checked, but ultimately, this might be a good thing. I'm 100% in favor of breaking Google's monopoly one way or another. Brave and DuckDuckGo and Kagi are all fine alternatives worthy of more prominence.
