Facing the backlash, Google said the same day that while Gemini and Search would still be off by default, schools could turn on Search without enabling Gemini AI products, rather than facing an all-or-nothing choice.

Wow, Google, wow. You're determined to burn off what goodwill you have left in the world, aren't you? https:// futurism.com/future-society/go ogle-search-engine-access-schools-ban-ai

I use DDGNOAI, I love it but anyone who doesn't want to, has many alternatives to google the nice euro people at Tuta made this list for us

On a similar note, I recently had to enable GenAI in my Photos app just to be able to search my photos, and the photo search is now worse than I remember it being before! I need to move off Google entirely for backups but I find the cross-device compatibility and convenience of the ecosystem really hard to give up. Lately, I've started using other…

That is exactly what is going on here. It is why Google can not offer something that does not use AI as their search engine uses AI at it's core for a long time now. As does every other search engine. The schools really do not understand what they are asking.

Headline Nov 1: GOOGL Market Cap Drops Nearly $500B After Google Search Fell Below 50% Of Alphabet's Revenue Headline today: Google Will Cut Off Search Engine Access To Schools Banning Generative AI AI is turning tech executives into brainless zombies? Maybe getting kids off Google search and finding an alternative will be better for society.

To paraphrase Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall, "How can you have any Google Search pudding if you don't eat your Google Gemini AI meat?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdu0RQOKR0IAlso, as mentioned elsewhere in this discussion, Google's "Search and A.I. are deeply integrated" assertion is eerily reminiscent of the "Windows and I.E. are…

Having briefly worked in a school IT environment (admittedly in 2019, so their stance may have changed since then), We're talking about a change that is literally in the news today. Have you had a recent concussion?

Google is reportedly threatening schools who wish to disable AI on student Chromebook laptops. Many ppl warned this would happen when Chromebooks first came out. We were ignored. This is a leopards eating faces moment. Short term, there are lots of other search engines; it's easy-peasy to change the default across the entire fleet. Pure # Linux is…

Google is introducing a policy for educational institutions where disabling AI-driven features will also result in the loss of access to Google Search. -

I just abandoned my 22yo gmail account. I feel liberated and empowered!I found all of the new LLM features to be utterly pointless and incredibly annoying, but the last straw was when my account was abruptly locked recently. For a week I couldn't access mail, maps, photos, digital picture frames for my extended family all went dark, my personal…

Do people like AI summaries? For Google, this is a multi-billion-dollar question. So I bet a team of analysts A/B tests this on millions of searches per day. Perhaps your opinion is not representative?

This is a new low for # Google : they will disable searches for schools that restrict AI Expect this to follow for the rest of us https://www. nytimes.com/2026/11/03/us/goog le-search-schools-restrict-ai.html

Unpopular opinion... Students see AI in Google Search outside school. We need to teach them how to use it, not assume they'll learn by osmosis. Keeping students stuck in 2002 doesn't solve the technology problem in education. #ai #google #technologyineducation

Google search enshittified itself. We have evidence that at least some leaders with power inside google made search perform worse to increase ad revenue (if users search more, they see more ads). There wasn't a better alternative, until LLMs came along. It will be some time until the wild west of LLM-SEO hacking settles into some semblence of a…

Do schools need "artificial intelligence"? How about authentic intelligence instead! 😂

Google's response to criticism of AI use in classrooms gives schools a choice with a catch: rejecting Gemini also means cutting off student access to Google Search. https:// appleinsider.com/articles/26/1 1/03/if-schools-turn-off-googles-ai-search-dies-with-it?utm_medium=social&utm_source=mastodon

There are other options. Just like Google was an alternative to Yahoo! 25 years ago. We survived that transition, we can survive this one.

Tangentially related:Google is willing to sacrifice children to push engagement. In family link they refuse to let me restrict the Google app. In what world do I want my 1st or 2nd grader opening the Google app and reading the news about murder, rape, and all the other horrendous things that are common in the Google apps news summary? Give us…

Just use another browser that doesn't track porn. Just kidding about the porn thing. Use DuckDuckGo, Brave, whatever. Fuck Google.

Kagi might have a great opportunity with a cheap/free/freemium model for K-12 students. Not only would the students become familiar with it and accustomed to the quality results, but the adults would see it and also appreciate the quality, including as an educational too.
