Nepal's Deadly Floods Kill 538, Expose Hydropower and Climate Risks
Disaster across Nepal-China border raises questions about glacier collapse, climate vulnerability, and the safety of hydropower infrastructure in Asia.
What to know
- Flash floods and landslides in late August killed at least 538 people across Nepal and the Tibet border, with 977 missing and 93,000 affected by the disaster.
- China's Foreign Ministry suggested a glacier collapse in Nepal may have triggered the floods, pointing to climate and geological hazards in the region.
- Nepal's Prime Minister linked the disaster to climate change and pledged relief funds; Pakistan dispatched emergency assistance.
- The floods expose vulnerabilities in Nepal's hydropower infrastructure and raise questions about climate risks to major development projects across Asia.
