JWST finds that Chariklo's faint rings have changed since first detected

Stellar-occultation observations with the James Webb Space Telescope show the small Centaur's two-ring system has shifted over just a few years, and astronomers don't yet know why.

What to know

  • Chariklo, a small Centaur object orbiting between Saturn and Uranus, is the smallest known solar system body confirmed to have rings.
  • New James Webb Space Telescope stellar-occultation observations show its faint, largely invisible ring system has changed in just a few years since prior measurements.
  • Astronomers have not yet identified the mechanism behind the change, raising questions about how rings persist around such a small, low-gravity body.
  • The findings have been published as a peer-reviewed study in Science Advances.

Study on Chariklo's changing rings appears in Science Advances

The underlying research is published as a peer-reviewed paper in Science Advances, formalizing the JWST stellar-occultation results on Chariklo's ring system for the scientific record.

    • If it were orbiting Saturn, it would be 9th in size (it orbits between Saturn and Uranus). It's larger than any of the 15,000 Jupiter Trojans (those trapped by Jupiter's gravity). If it were in the main asteroid belt it would be 16th in size, and there are 1.438 million of those known. It's small compared to major planets and their larger moons…

Space.com details the JWST occultation findings on Chariklo

A fuller writeup explains that Webb's stellar occultation technique captured the shift in the small body's ring system, describing the discovery as showing the rings are more complex than previously understood.

“Using the James Webb Space Telescope, astronomers have discovered that the ring system of the tiny solar system body is even more interesting than they knew.”
