That was my takeaway too. This is the most humanizing story about Trump I've heard in maybe forever, and the point was not to berate Trump, but to give a very accurate metaphor for Canada's relationship with the States: they might be your best friend, but there's still a risk you're going to get shot after they let you into their house.

Actually, the US gets very little toilet paper from Canada. What they do get though, is the softwood lumber that is the raw material for toilet paper. Softwood lumber has been an issue between Canada and the USA for as long as I can remember.
