   UN expands Ebola treatment capacity and strengthens inter-agency coordination

   Harneis highlighted integrated coordination among government, WHO, UN agencies, NGOs, and Africa CDC, including an increase in Ebola treatment center beds from roughly 900 to 1,340 over the past month. The response also includes coordination on transmission control along the Congo River and preparations for new vaccine clinical trials.

   “We have an integrated approach to expanding bed capacity in Ebola treatment centres. We started with around 900 beds and added 440 over the past month.”

   Harneis highlights operational challenges in diverse, conflict-affected regions — The Senior Coordinator described the affected areas as incredibly varied—including major cities like Kisangani (1.5 million population), conflict zones, artisanal mining areas, and sparsely populated border regions. Roads are in poor condition, aircraft access is difficult in many places, and aid workers and health facilities have faced violence from a small minority of young men.

   Julien Harneis, Senior Ebola Coordinator, briefed the press on the scale and status of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, noting progress in Ituri and Bunia but continuing case increases in other areas like Butembo in North Kivu. The outbreak spans an area roughly the distance from Geneva to Dublin, covering two time zones.
