Trump's 50% tariff freezes Canadian dairy exports to US
Canadian dairy farmers report stalled US sales and warn of forced milk dumping since Trump's tariff took effect.
What to know
- A 50 percent US tariff on $20bn in Canadian goods, including dairy, took effect August 22, 2026, largely halting cross-border dairy sales.
- Because milk is highly perishable and farmers cannot quickly redirect production, lost processor demand could force milk dumping or herd reductions.
- Washington says Canada's supply-management system unfairly restricts US dairy exports; Canadian producers say existing tariff-free access under CUSMA is already underused.
- Industry estimates cited on social media put broader farm-sector losses from the trade war at $31 billion this year and $32 billion next year.

Al Jazeera details dairy farmers' losses and dumping risk
Reporting from Abbotsford, British Columbia describes how milk from Casey Pruim's farm and others can no longer reliably be sold to processors exporting to the US, raising the risk of milk dumping and herd reductions if demand keeps shrinking.
“If the processor who's exporting some of his product to the United States can no longer sell into that market because he's now priced out of the market with a 50 percent tariff, that's how it would impact the dairy farm.”

Federally we have very similar systems to 75% of the world, but provincially we have archiac interprovincial trade barriers that are very problematic. If you want competition we don't so much need to open the regulatory frame work for the dairy market, we need to knock down interprovincial trade costs.
