Developer creates Eridin for GBA and PC from shared codebase

Matt Greer announces a fantasy strategy game designed to work on both Game Boy Advance and personal computers.

What to know

  • Greer is developing Eridin, a fantasy turn-based strategy game, for both Game Boy Advance (with e-reader card support) and PC using C and a shared codebase architecture.
  • E-reader card manufacturing has become nearly impossible; printers declined his specialized printing needs after equipment changes forced cancellation of his previous game Pixel Pup.
  • The dual-platform approach serves as insurance: if e-reader card manufacturing remains unsolved by game completion, Greer has a PC version ready to release.

Greer commits to e-reader development despite manufacturing obstacles

Despite repeated setbacks with e-reader card manufacturing, Greer decided to pursue his vision for an e-reader game that uses the device in novel ways. He is developing Eridin in parallel with continuing to explore manufacturing options, acknowledging he may ultimately only release the PC version.

“I really like the e-reader. I still want to make a game for it that takes advantage of this unique device in ways Nintendo never did.”

Greer explains manufacturing challenges that prompted dual-platform approach

Greer detailed how his previous e-reader game Pixel Pup was completed and had cards manufactured but was cancelled after his printer switched equipment and could no longer produce scannable cards. He reached out to a dozen printers nationwide without success, leading him to release Pixel Pup as a standard GBA game instead.

“I've reached out to about a dozen printers across the country and none of them wanted to take on my specific printing needs.”

Developer announces Eridin, a GBA/PC game with shared codebase

Matt Greer published a blog post detailing his decision to develop Eridin, a fantasy turn-based strategy game, for both Game Boy Advance with e-reader card support and PC simultaneously using a single codebase written in C with DevKitPro/libtonc (GBA) and SDL2 (PC).
