This some wildly pedantic stuff. The knowledge is ingest once use many, that's the difference. Just like any book could be copied by hand before the printing press, but the press was set once print many.

I've seen LLMs generate literal copies of functions from libraries I've written or are familiar with, with matching function and variable names, in its output with zero attribution in complete disregard to the license. That isn't learning, its copying, encoding it in the LLM model data.

Have been thinking a LOT about this outright theft. Context is news scraping but AI has stolen from so many authors, too. And in Anthropic suit writers are now jumping through hoops to get 50% (less legal %!) of what *might* be $3000 a title. For AI it is a pittance.
