The 84-year-old Kentucky senator was wheeled to a Senate vote and gave no verbal response to questions.

What to know

  • McConnell appeared entirely nonverbal when questioned by a journalist on September 23, responding only with hand gestures before being wheeled to a Senate vote.
  • The incident occurred months after his June hospitalization and amid ongoing concerns about whether he is mentally and physically fit to serve.
  • His wife stood in for him at a public event the same weekend, suggesting his condition may be worse than publicly acknowledged.
  • Online discussion reflects disagreement over whether keeping an incapacitated senator in office constitutes party loyalty or elder abuse.

McConnell's continued service prioritizes Republican political power over his health and dignity.

  • “This man likely qualifies for Hospice. Republicans are so selfish that they will force a dying man to keep going so as not to lose political power. Shameful.”

This arrangement reflects McConnell's own desire to remain in office regardless of his condition.

  • “I do hate that we live in a society where something like this can happen, but I genuinely think this is what he would have wanted.”

    • The fact that this person is still considered an “active” member of our government is insane and I don’t understand why people aren’t more angry about this. THIS is who is supposed to represent the people? It’s a joke no matter what side of the aisle you’re on politically. It literally makes our government look like even more of a joke.

    • Man have you been to Kentucky? He has been a pretty accurate representative of the population's values. This is not a compliment to either Mitch or my home commonwealth.

McConnell wheeled to Senate vote, gives no verbal response to questions

Conservative journalist Desiree Townsend posted a video showing McConnell being wheeled into a black car ahead of a 5:30 p.m. Senate roll call vote. When Townsend asked whether he felt ready to return to work and whether he would rather be home, McConnell offered only a weak wave and peace sign, with no verbal acknowledgment despite appearing confused by the rain and showing delayed responses.

“Do you want to be at work, sir? Would you rather be home?”

Public concern rises over McConnell's fitness and Republicans' refusal to address it

The video sparked widespread discussion online about whether McConnell is fit to remain in office. Commenters questioned the Republican party's willingness to keep an incapacitated senator in power rather than lose political leverage.

    • It's his "V" victory WW2 sign, not peace. Mitch would never want to support peace and love. Hell nah

    • It's not a peace sign, he's regressed to childhood and remembering V for victory.
