To me the redlines are obligatory statements for domestic audience and potentially US observers. Trump made similar statements on Iran and Ukraine. The negotiators already struggle to come together on trade, which by far out weighs every other consideration. There was nothing on the table, but to sell the stay of execution, they both needed a show.
