Vucic Resigns Serbian Presidency to Run for Prime Minister
Vucic steps down as head of state ahead of the Oct. 25 vote, a power-switch move likened to Putin's, pardoning dozens of protest-linked defendants on his way out.
What to know
- Vucic resigned as president Sunday to clear the way for a run at becoming prime minister if his SNS wins the Oct. 25 snap parliamentary election.
- The maneuver echoes Vladimir Putin's earlier switch between presidency and premiership to remain in power despite term limits.
- The snap election was a core demand of student-led protests triggered by the November 2024 Novi Sad railway canopy collapse that killed 16 people.
- Ana Brnabic becomes interim president; a new presidential election must be completed within 90 days, with Vucic pardoning 49 protest-linked defendants on his way out.

The only thing a president has over a PM in a parliamentary country is a guaranteed pension and office. He secured those, so no need to be President again. But he may lose, and if he loses he's gonna face charges, so that can be purely academic.

But was it really the progressives that won-out in Hungary? I think it was more that people were just so pissed and tired of Orbán’s 15 year rule and how out-of-control prices are for everything.

They're not blamed for our 'internal corruption', they're being blamed for supporting our corrupt mafia/government. Can you understand the difference between the two?

Can you give a little background as to what you’re talking about? I mean this genuinely; not being snarky. I didn’t know he ended up pardoning some of the student protesters. What happened exactly?
