Spain's China outreach deepens as Germany and France push tougher EU line

Barcelona honors Shanghai at its biggest festival as Sanchez's repeated visits to Xi fuel EU friction over China policy.

What to know

  • Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez has visited Xi Jinping four times in four years and is pushing the wider EU to warm to Beijing, even as Germany and France unite behind a tougher trade stance against subsidised Chinese competition.
  • Barcelona's La Mercè festival named Shanghai its first-ever Asian city of honour, a cultural symbol of the deepening Spain-China relationship that critics say serves Madrid's interests over the bloc's.
  • The European Commission puts the EU-China trade imbalance at roughly €1bn a day, and some member states fear Spain's openness is letting China become an economic and strategic 'enemy within' the bloc.
  • Online reaction splits between those arguing all major powers (US, Russia, China) act in self-interest and no one is morally superior, and those citing alleged Chinese debt-trap diplomacy as reason for caution.

The dispute Whether China's growing influence in Europe is a pragmatic, trade-driven alternative to an unreliable US, or a strategic threat using debt and propaganda comparable to what critics accuse Russia and the US of doing. · positions read across 15 posts and comments

No major power — the US, EU, or China — is morally superior; criticism of Spain's China ties is hypocritical given EU and US conduct elsewhere.

  • “China is definitely not a moral regime. Question is, which big power is? Is Europe that moral after all? We're working closely with Israel and suppressing anyone who speaks against them.”

China is the more rational, trade-focused actor compared with an aggressive US and Russia, making closer ties sensible.

  • “The reality is that China wants a multipolar world. The US wants hegemony as does Putin.”

China's economic engagement abroad follows a debt-trap pattern (ports, grids, territory) that should make Europe wary.

  • “sri lankan port leasing after debts for 99 years in the heart of BRI (including asset seizures) laos electricity grid was given 90% to china tajikistans border issue, resolved by giving up territory for the debt restructure”

The real failure is EU internal disunity — Germany and France outsource to China themselves while demanding others like Spain sacrifice their industry.

  • “This particular problem seems to be about Germany and France forgetting that the EU is all of us (and not only themselves) and they cannot keep asking Spain to stay a sacrificed Tertiary country forever, while the benefit from Chinese…”

Online audience disputes the BBC's framing of China's role

A Bluesky post accused the BBC of constructing a one-sided narrative, arguing China seeks a multipolar world while the US and Russia seek hegemony; reddit commenters then debated whether China's record (alleged debt-trap deals, propaganda) undercuts that view, or whether all major powers act the same way.

“If you have to chose to live under fascist Trump/ Putin or "communist" Xi you pick Xi. The EU is a bit player.”

I don't know what narrative the BBC is trying to construct here. The reality is that China wants a multipolar world. The US wants hegemony as does Putin. If you have to chose to live under fascist Trump/ Putin or "communist" Xi you pick Xi. The EU is a bit player.

    • In principle this is completely true and would be my main focus too, except that the problem of loosing our automotive industry is precisely of those German companies complying about this while outsourcing and selling to China themselves. Same companies that used to manufacture in countries like Spain as well. This particular problem seems to be…

BBC frames Spain-China bonhomie as an EU fault line

A BBC analysis piece, syndicated across BBC Top, BBC World and social feeds, argues Spain's friendliness with Beijing exemplifies a broader splintering of EU strategic alignment, quoting an academic on whether Spain or its EU partners moved apart first.

“It's a bit chicken and egg. Did Spain distance itself from European allies, or did they distance themselves from us?”
