What to know

  • Letters containing unidentified substances were mailed to congressional and state election offices nationwide, prompting an FBI, USPS Inspection Service and Capitol Police investigation.
  • Some envelopes bore a return address linked to a former DSA office; the organization says it has not used that address since 2013.
  • The mailings follow this week's evacuations at Louisiana and Oklahoma election offices and an intercepted powder package in Ohio, and arrive three weeks before Election Day.
  • The episode echoes a 2023 wave of fentanyl-laced letters sent to election offices in six states.

“Some of the letters contained an unknown substance and we are working closely with our law enforcement partners to respond to each incident.”
