What to know

  • New GOP-backed rules require voters to seal an inner envelope and limit ballot assistance to 'near-relatives'; a federal judge upheld these rules just before the mail ballot request deadline.
  • Data from 27 counties shows roughly a 3% statewide mail-ballot rejection rate so far, double the 2022 rate, with some Democratic-leaning counties at 7-8%.
  • An estimated 3,942 ballots could be rejected statewide if the trend holds, and few rejected voters typically return to 'cure' their ballots.
  • Gov. Stein and voting rights groups are urging affected voters to check BallotTrax, fix defective ballots, or vote in person instead.

“North Carolinians, please make a plan to vote this year, in person if possible. And if you're voting by mail, make sure you seal both envelopes on your ballot. Don't let them take away your vote.”

    • 📩 New data show that 3.2% of all mail ballots received so far in North Carolina have been rejected. If that rejection rate holds statewide, a total of around 4,000 ballots, almost all likely from eligible voters, would be projected to be discarded in the state’s election:

Data compiled by Common Cause North Carolina with the Southern Coalition for Social Justice from 27 of the state's 100 counties shows an overall rejection rate of about 3%, double the 2022 national rate, with some Democratic strongholds at 7-8%; Guilford, Wake and Durham counties each show roughly 2-2.5% of ballots rejected solely for failing to seal the new inner envelope.

“If the trends hold, we're looking at thousands of votes that could be spoiled because of this new guidance…”
