What to know
- Guardian commentary alleges Trump is abandoning Ukraine through multiple policy moves—buying Russian diesel, waiving sanctions, cutting intelligence sharing, and attempting to oust Zelenskyy—driven by personal animosity, financial interest in normalizing Russia relations, and unexplained Putin influence.
- US-Russian talks on Ukraine settlement terms are at an advanced stage following St. Petersburg meetings, according to Tisdall.
- Tisdall frames Trump's actions as appeasement comparable to Chamberlain's failed Munich negotiations, arguing Europe must take punitive steps against Trump rather than accept his approach.
“Trump has set his shrivelled, grasping heart on normalising relations with Putin's repressive rogue regime, opening the way for lucrative deals on energy, raw materials, and control of the Arctic and outer space.”

Tisdall outlines Trump's alleged Ukraine betrayal
Tisdall catalogs specific Trump actions as evidence of betrayal: buying Russian diesel, waiving tougher sanctions, interrupting US satellite and intelligence sharing with Kyiv, and attempting to oust President Zelenskyy. He characterizes these moves as driven by personal dislike of Zelenskyy, financial motives to normalize relations with Russia for energy and Arctic deals, and an unexplained hold Putin appears to have over Trump.
“Recent steps – his shocking decision to fund Putin's war machine by buying Russian diesel, his waiving of tougher sanctions, his mysterious, lethal interruptions in US satellite and intelligence sharing with Kyiv, and his renewed attempt to oust Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy – mark Trump out as the skulking Judas…”

And another. Trump isn’t just betraying Ukraine to the Kremlin, he’s selling out America too.

www.theguardian.com/commentisfre... Thank you Simon Tiddall @theguardian.com 👏 I agree with every word you’ve written. The consequences of not standing up to this monstrous president are far reaching/hugely consequential. (I wonder regularly what Putin “has” on Trump - it must be monumental)

but later he lamented that it bought them 1 year of preparation Then he is an idiot that doesn't understand anything. He is just later complaining about something that in reality he wouldn't have liked. Grass is always greener, but he is just wrong. He was however fully committed to fighting France&GB if they intervened, just like in case of…

— ‘Trump’s perfidy is the shame of the world, and it is the world – and not only Ukraine – that will pay the price over the longer term. This calculated attempt to force Kyiv’s submission imperils everyone. Ukraine, if it is allowed to fall, will haunt Europe and the wider geopolitical biosphere for decades, as was the case with Czechoslovakia…

It was still just stupid to give up Czechia for free, so much industry and arms for free for Hitler. If the goal was to improve allied position then it failed miserably.

At least Chamberlin was trying to do the right thing at the time. Donald just wants to announce the war is over so he can take credit for it. Nothing else matters to him. Ukraine fighting for its country is just an inconvenient obstacle for him.

Tbf Daladier wanted to fight, but the public probably didnt want to. The whole Munich conference happened because Daladier was willing to fight germans to protect czechoslovakia, even though they werent ready to. He hated appeasement and disliked Chamberlain for it. "One could add that Trump will never stop seeing Zelensky and Ukraine as Joe Biden’s project and the war itself as Biden’s fault, with Zelensky as Biden’s errand boy. He also sees Russia as a far more attractive business partner."

There's nothing good about Trump's Putin pivot, but it is darkly funny to watch the pro-Ukraine, Pro-Trump pundits squirm. ICYMI Cathy Young:

Glad the @nytimes.com is realizing how damaging Trump is now, but they puffed him up for years and trashed his opponents (like Clinton) with stupid criticisms to create a false equivalency. They are complicit.

🇺🇸🇺🇦 Trump has HAD IT with Ukraine, and he's not hiding it anymore. He says America and Europe have spent fortunes on the war, Europe is exhausted, and Kyiv needs to make a deal before things get even worse. His argument is that Russia is simply too big to keep fighting
-
Could Trump “pivot” again if he decides it’s to his advantage? Maybe—but no one should wait to find out. For now, the Trump/Putin alliance seems to be the order of the day.

At this point, anyone committed to Ukraine’s freedom and sovereignty must be committed to stopping Trump. And professed Ukraine supporters who have acted as his enablers could start by admitting that they were wrong.
-
For whatever reason, Trump is now acting as Putin’s ally—even if the constraints of American politics will only let him "pivot" so far. That leaves pro-Ukraine, pro-Trump (or anti-anti-Trump) conservatives in an extremely awkward position.

🇺🇸🇪🇺🇷🇺 Trump is treating Europe like a fading asset and Ukraine like an annoyance he would rather walk away from. The good times he remembers with Putin in Anchorage look better every week that Zelensky keeps calling for more Patriots and more cash. In a conversation with
