What to know

  • Vance's remarks mark a further escalation of GOP rhetoric against El-Sayed, following Trump's 'jihadist' and Muslim Brotherhood characterizations days earlier.
  • El-Sayed denies extremist affiliations; relatives in Egypt have expressed Muslim Brotherhood support, which he does not claim personally.
  • Polling one week before Election Day is mixed but consistently shows El-Sayed with a lead over Rogers, ranging from 1 to 6.3 points depending on the survey.
  • The race is seen as potentially pivotal to Senate control, and could make El-Sayed the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate.

“I think Mike is fundamentally a decent guy and the kind of public servant that you want in Washington D.C.”

Vance headlines Rogers rally in Howell, Michigan

Vance was scheduled to headline a Republican rally at CHI Aviation, Livingston County Airport in Howell, to mobilize voters for Rogers ahead of Election Day, with Vance indicating his anti-El-Sayed remarks would be central to his speech.

“We should reject that guy as conservatives. We should reject him as Americans, and that’s obviously a big part of what I’m going to be saying later today.”

New poll shows El-Sayed leading Rogers by 6.3 points

A WDIV-TV/Detroit News poll conducted by the Glengariff Group (Oct 19-22) found El-Sayed at 51.4% to Rogers' 45.1% among likely voters, while other recent surveys (InsiderAdvantage, Marist) showed a tighter margin-of-error race.

“Abdul el Sayed, who maybe more than any Democrat running in the nation, has engaged in the kind of explicitly anti-white racial hatred that has become common on the Democratic Party, I’d say that person should not be elected.”
    — JD Vance, U.S. Vice President · source
  3. background

Vance declines to disavow Trump's 'jihadist' label — Asked if he agreed El-Sayed was a 'jihadist' as Trump claimed, Vance said the Democrat 'certainly has a lot of weird friends' and had aligned with people who justify violence against the United States.

  4. background

Vance accuses El-Sayed of 'anti-white racial hatred' — Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews before departing for Michigan, Vice President Vance said El-Sayed has engaged in explicit anti-white racial hatred common within the Democratic Party and that voters should reject his candidacy, while calling GOP rival Mike Rogers "fundamentally a decent guy."
