Anthropic Files for IPO, Filing Reveals AI Use Now Outspends Payroll

A nearly 70,000-word prospectus discloses massive compute bets, existential-risk warnings, and internal Claude usage that now exceeds employee compensation.

What to know

  • Anthropic's IPO filing runs nearly 70,000 words and discloses huge planned compute spending alongside uncertainty about how long AI customer demand will last.
  • Internal Claude usage, valued at what Anthropic charges customers, surpassed its monthly employee pay as of April and grew more than 250-fold by September.
  • The filing lands amid broader market volatility: a Nasdaq selloff, a 12% Alphabet stock drop, Intel's earnings-driven plunge, and Meta's $95 billion stock issuance for AI infrastructure.
  • Observers are split on whether the IPO will spark a fresh AI rally or add to bubble concerns, with some investors reportedly selling AI stocks to fund other AI bets.

“a lot of AI neoclouds are going to go belly-up”
