What to know

  • The AFC postponed the 2027 Asian Cup from January–February 2027 to December 2027–January 2028 on November 3, citing regional security concerns and logistical disruptions caused by Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.
  • Houthi missile and drone strikes on Saudi Arabia, including at least 20 strikes on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, killed 12–17 people and injured more than 300, prompting the decision.
  • The postponement marks a reversal from AFC president Sheikh Salman's late-October stance that preparations were proceeding for the original January 2027 date, though he had declined to rule out the possibility.
  • Saudi Arabia will host the Asian Cup for the first time and is also slated to host the FIFA World Cup in 2034; other sporting events in the region have also been disrupted or rescheduled.

“The new dates of the tournament will be presented to FIFA for approval.”
