India evacuates tens of thousands as Cyclone Murasu bears down on Andhra Pradesh

A week after Cyclone Arnab killed six people, a second storm approaches the same stretch of India's east coast.

What to know

  • Cyclone Murasu was forecast to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast near Ongole between 11:30pm Monday and 4am Tuesday with winds of 100-110 km/h and gusts to 120 km/h, weaker than the prior storm.
  • About 2,000 people had been evacuated by Monday with authorities aiming to move roughly 30,000 total; six NDRF and seven state disaster teams were deployed.
  • The storm follows Cyclone Arnab, which killed six people and destroyed dozens of homes and crops on the same coastline about a week earlier.
  • Schools were closed in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Odisha, and officials warned thousands of electrical poles could be damaged.
