Automakers urge permanent ban on Chinese vehicles ahead of Congress session
Major automakers push lawmakers to pass legislation blocking Chinese car imports, citing surveillance risks and unfair competition.
What to know
- Major automakers are pushing Congress to enact a permanent ban on Chinese vehicles, framing it as a national security and fair competition issue amid concerns about surveillance risks and data protection.
- The ban has bipartisan support and passed a Senate committee in July with over 100 House co-sponsors, but faces uncertain timeline with Democrats potentially taking control after elections.
- President Trump's September statement that he would accept Chinese automakers building cars in the US contradicts the industry push for a permanent ban.
- A Biden-era regulation already effectively blocks Chinese automakers from the US market, but automakers seek permanent legislative protection.
US car prices have become unaffordable due to market concentration and domestic manufacturer pricing power.

Congressional aides warn Democratic control may delay or block Chinese vehicle ban
Some congressional aides and auto lobbyists believe that if Democrats win control of Congress, there may not be enough time to approve the Chinese vehicle ban before this session ends in December.
“We need to protect the US market from a flood of Chinese imports that carry surveillance risk and disadvantage current manufacturers that have made generational investments in American communities.”

Man, all the damage to our society done either directly or at the behest of American automakers has given me very little sympathy for them. Millions of people have died from poor technology. Death of public transit. The entire suburban housing pyramid scheme crippling the American dream. All of it can be laid at the feet of the auto and oil…

Nikkei of Japan took apart a BYD, meticulously documented every part, created a manufacturing analysis and sold the document for $6k a copy. The Japanese manufacturers distributed hundreds of copies of the book to its engineers in order to compete with the Chinese. The US manufacturers lobbied congress to ban the car. Post WWII the US sent a man named Deming to Japan to introduce production management and quality standards. Toyota held Deming as God for generations. I'm a analysts, in my Masters program I studied Deming and his impact on Japans production management.

see, if you pivot the concept of industry (carmakers) with the concept of consumers, then the protections of a socialist democracy that shield citizens from the excess of capitalism (which most US citizens DONT have) are being sought for the industry, greater protections than what they already DO have. Hence, the fucking joke.

I’d love to read more about this. Can you share where you got these numbers? Does it split all the costs out?

The world is rapidly passing the US automakers by. Banning imports will only accelerate this movement.

The industry group asking for this includes pretty much every OEM not named Tesla. I doubt Toyota would be down, even if a big chunk of their production is in the US south.

Finance bros fucked those workers by prioritizing the graph line going up using financial tricks instead of by producing a better product. It’s not our fault.

It’s not about what we want (they don’t care). It’s about what vehicles have the highest margins. They know we need transportation so we have to buy something. Shareholder profits are higher if they don’t offer low margin options.

Turns out it's much easier for a battery company to become and car company than it is for a car company to become a battery company. They're cooked

This. They are basically pricing it that because they can. Especially, the actual primary culprit behind high prices - monopolistic middlemen stealerships from the 1900s; which we are forced to buy from. For all the shit Tesla gets, being able to buy direct, is going to be a MASSIVE reason that I am considering them for my next choice.

I wouldn't drive one for free unless I needed a heavy duty truck. Their passenger car offerings are low quality junk

The US will have mediocre and expensive cars while the rest of the world transitions to cheap and efficient EVs. US automakers were bailed out because of the Japanese fuel-efficient cars. Why can’t they just compete and sell cars around the world?
