NCSC confirms UK hit by European supermarket fridge cyberattacks
Britain's cyber agency says it worked through the night to alert UK firms after hackers remotely overheated supermarket refrigeration units across Europe.
What to know
- UK confirmed as affected by a cyberattack that remotely overheated supermarket refrigeration units across Belgium, Luxembourg, Sweden, Ireland, the Netherlands, Estonia and Finland.
- Attacks spoiled large quantities of fresh and frozen food worth millions of euros, echoing an earlier October incident in France using the same method.
- NCSC's Richard Horne says it remains unknown whether states or criminals are responsible, and warns AI is making long-tolerated weaknesses in operational technology easier to find and exploit.
- NCSC is urging organisations to renew outdated systems, isolate them from the internet, and individuals to use automatic updates, offline backups and passkeys.
“They've not kept them upgraded. They've not kept them in secure compartments, disconnected from the internet, and that leaves a whole load of vulnerabilities.”

NCSC chief Horne warns firms to upgrade ageing operational technology
In the NCSC's annual report and BBC interviews, Richard Horne said decades of underinvestment in operational technology left widespread vulnerabilities that AI now lets adversaries find and exploit at unprecedented scale, and said it was still too early to identify who was behind the attacks.
“because vulnerabilities that have been tolerated for far too long can now be discovered and exploited at a scale that was once unimaginable…”

NCSC says UK food supply chain also hit by the hack
The National Cyber Security Centre said it was aware of a couple of instances where vulnerable technology had been exploited in the UK and that it worked through the night to alert potentially affected organisations.

Cyberattack raises fridge temperatures at supermarkets across Europe — Hundreds of stores in Belgium, Luxembourg, Sweden, Ireland, the Netherlands, Estonia and Finland had fridge and freezer temperatures remotely pushed as high as 50°C, spoiling fresh and frozen food worth millions of euros; around 40 Delhaize stores in Belgium and Luxembourg were among those affected.
