Scott Colom's lead over Hyde-Smith widens in uncalled Mississippi Senate race
Democrat Scott Colom's margin over GOP Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith has grown past 1,900 votes as Mississippi counts remaining affidavit ballots, with no certification until Nov. 13.
What to know
- Colom's lead over Hyde-Smith has grown steadily each day, from 28 votes on election night to over 1,800-2,000 votes by Nov. 6, as remaining affidavit ballots are counted.
- Mississippi has no automatic recount law, meaning any challenge to the result would require a separate legal push; certification is due by Nov. 13.
- A Colom win would make him Mississippi's first Black U.S. senator since Reconstruction and the first Democrat to hold the seat in 44 years.
- The state GOP chair has vowed to 'fight like hell' over the vote count as Colom's margin widens, raising the possibility of a legal contest.
The dispute Some commenters treat Colom's eventual win as near-certain given the trend of remaining ballots, while others insist the race is too close and procedurally fragile (no recount law) to call before certification. · positions read across 161 posts and comments
This is a historic, deserved win building momentum and poetic justice against Hyde-Smith.

Don't celebrate yet — the count is close and slow, and anything could still happen.
-
“I hope so, but this is agonizing. I'm not doing happy dance until all votes are in, because as we know, things can turn on a dime in these slow counts.”

Because Mississippi lacks an automatic recount law, Hyde-Smith or the GOP may pursue a legal fight to force a recount or contest the result.
-
“I assumed that they had an automatic recount, but the state has none of that. Once she has been confirmed beaten, look for Hyde-Smith to try to get a conservative federal judge to force a recount, that is the only way one happens.”

Professor points to 'voter apathy' toward Hyde-Smith as a factor
A Mississippi political science professor said voters appeared unenthusiastic about Hyde-Smith while Colom generated genuine enthusiasm, offering an explanation for the race's unexpected closeness.
“Colom's a really high-quality candidate... there was a lot of voter apathy.”

Colom's lead widens past 1,800 votes by Friday morning, race still uncalled
By Friday, Colom held 49% support to Hyde-Smith's share, with his lead over 1,800 ballots, as counting of remaining affidavit ballots continued ahead of the Nov. 13 certification deadline.

A race this close is almost unheard of in Mississippi. Hyde-Smith won by 10 points in 2020, and Trump carried the state by more than 20 in 2024. If Colom’s lead holds through certification, it would be another blow to a Republican Party already bleeding seats everywhere.🔵

I’m not saying anything rigorous, but I think Occam’s razor says that Democrats winning races nationwide vote by 10-20 points, including in all the red states where Republicans have complete control over the elections, isn’t something that can be realistically rigged. When the deciding races are close within a few percentage points then sure, it’s…

Election nerditry: Mississippi is getting a lot of attention, with it's razor-thin margin in the still-not-yet-fully-counted Senate contest and lack of a recount provision in its election law. They're very accurate, (called every race correctly last night) and in total they've recalled I think 3-4 projections but are still like 99% and usually the first to call it. AP is the most accurate, but they're basically last and after most networks/orgs have called it.
