Astronomer Jonathan McDowell and space-security expert Victoria Samson said Russia and China would now "respond in kind" by deploying their own weapons, calling the acknowledgment a significant and possibly unwise escalation given the US had never previously confirmed such capabilities.

It is the highest point on the Earth's equator, meaning the easiest to reach orbit from, and equatorial orbits repeat every 90 minutes vs other orbits that only repeat once or twice a day. If you are going to the trouble of building a big launcher, you want to use it often to justify the cost.

This one is just the US being stupid. Everyone is coy about this. We have a space plane...the Chinese have a space plane. I'm going to wild ass guess that there have been active weapons in orbit for years....Russia would have one too but they are broke and their space program is rides to the ISS.
